If you want more housing discourse, I wrote a response to that Atlantic article (sorry lol).

Tens of millions of people face eviction right now!!

Under capitalism, jobs/economic crisis --> eviction crisis. It doesn't have to be this way.

A few things: https://truthout.org/articles/the-covid-19-pandemic-shows-the-dangers-of-for-profit-housing/
1) Please don't write an article about housing+COVID without mentioning 40 million people face eviction. Ok? The lesson is NOT that the market is working right now.

2) We can create systems where loss of income does not result in a loss of housing. Public / social housing!
3) We should understand gentrification as rooted in capitalism, colonialism, and white supremacy. This is essentially the analysis I see from the tenants movement.

It's not just "new development = root cause".

Displacement is SYSTEMIC and there are no easy solutions.
^this one is crucial. Really want people to have this deeper understanding.

4) I legit appreciate the focus on NIMBYs as land owners. But don't let the biggest investors and financiers of the real estate industry off the hook! All capitalists must be fought.
So .... I hope this helps maybe a bit. I wish people would pay more attention to the actual analysis (and practice) coming out of grassroots organizations run by tenants.

I promise you they're not as naive as neoliberals want folks to think they are.
