If a process to get a particular service for the blind is set up in such a way that a blind person has to fill in a print form and read written correspondence, have I overcome my disability when I manage to hoodwink someone into helping me filling it in?
No. I have been harshly confronted with the fact that even so-called blind-specific services can be inaccessible and unaccomodating, and show me that I have to fight battles others don't in order to get what I need. If I overcome any disability, it is my fellow man's ignorance
Its a good thing conversations are happening about this. I myself have featured in a lot of them. But there's still a lot to do. As long as the divide between "we can't do that" regarding an accomodation clashes with an "I can't do that" regarding physical ability, we're not done
