/ Here's a contextualization of the the Twitter/Facebook/Amazon bans on the insurrection, and what to do next.
/ After WWII, US democracy was so ascendant that it was like an impregnable castle. Everyone in the US had just defended the castle, and was aware of the cost and importance of its walls.
/ Recently, lots of people that were born inside don't even really notice the the democracy castle, and aren't viscerally aware of the range of malign forces trying to conquer it.
/ Now, the walls of democracy have a clear crack. What should we do? Two things: foil the attackers, and then strengthen the walls.
/ Ideally, law enforcement would have infiltrated the insurrectionists and made arrests while things were in the planning stages. However (possibly due to interference by the attackers), our law enforcement hasn't managed. It's on us to help in legal ways, as a stopgap.
/ That's why it's good that companies are kicking the attackers off tools, apps, platforms, hardware, and networks. It's not high-minded to sell pickaxes to the people trying to tunnel into our democracy castle.
/ Refusing to aid the attackers will make them upset, but but appeasing your attackers is not a good way to win.
/ After we fend off the attack, we should strengthen the walls. Silicon Valley has a lot of inventive people who know how to get stuff done.
/ Our attention is zero-sum; we need to pay less attention to selling ads and a more attention to mechanisms for creating public goods, effective institutions, widespread civic engagement, sound leadership, etc.
/ There are lots of ways to improve the castle. Can you found a new one?
