In the interview with Canale 5 Francis strongly condemned abortion, legalized in his country, Argentina, Dec. 30.
He noted that despite the fact that "no one is saved alone," today's culture tends to discard children, the ill, the elderly, the poor and refugees.
"Let's not forget the brutality of the throwaway culture. What loses utility is discarded. People who are not useful are discarded, children are discarded, by rejecting them or by returning them to the sender when it's seen that they have an illness or when they're not wanted."
"Before birth, life is canceled."

Abortion, he insisted, is not a religious matter: "Some say, 'if something like this happen, it can be done, religion will understand.' But attention: abortion is not a religious matter, it's a human one, it's a problem of human ethics."
Among those who insisted the pope himself would understand was Argentine president Alberto Fernández. Without mentioning him, the pope addressed a man who kept saying he hoped the pope wouldn't get angry at him for being a "Catholic who doesn't see abortion as a sin."
