A thread on kellys heroes
I first became aware of the film in 1984 when i saw it on a vhs tape rented from the video shop, i was 14, it looked cool, it was a war film, and well iv seen it at least 1000 times since, it is without doubt my favourite movie, so so, iv requested
Burning bridges to be played at my funeral.
The film has the greatest cast assembled
Clint eastwood
Telly savalas
Donald sutherland
Don rickles
Karl otto alberty
Carroll o connor
The film was directed by brian g hutton, who had last made, where eagles dare with clint in 1968
Initally drawn to the script by its initial anti war sentiment, Vietnam was in full swing at the time, the tet offensive, the battle of hue, were still fresh in peoples minds, nearly 50,000 Americans had been killed, war films weren't popular at the time, clint saw its potential
As an anti war film, but has since objected to the films final cut, as usual studio heads removed certain scenes from the film which showed certain aspects they felt didnt fit with the film making money, strangely it bombed on release as MASH came out at the same time and stole
Its thunder, late night reruns, vhs and dvd have now made it a cult film spawning 50 years, with notable lines, characters, and action thats stood the test of time.
Made in yugoslavia at the start of 1969, it wrapped in december for a release in 1970, it benefiited from having
Titos army and airforce help with men and machinery, yes the tigers arent real, the crew used russian t34s and built a tiger frame to fit, the uniforms are genuine ww2 issue, as were the weapons.
When i watch the film, its entertaining, but there is a cut out there that would
Show some more depth to the characters, for instance, after the scene where they take their first casualties in the minefield, theres a scene where they are waiting in a barn, in the film everyone looks downbeat, then oddball arrives with his column a mile long.
In the uncut
Version, gutowski, the sniper, pulls his rifle on kelly threatening to kill him, some of the others stand round in a mexican stand off, until oddball arrives, theres also a scene with an raf pilot in hiding, oddball and his crew partying before moving out, a scene between kelly
And big joe about the politics of war, scenes that were cut out at the studios request, not the directors, an uncut version has yet to be released, so come on mgm, do it.
John landis of blues brothers fame, was an assistant on the film, he also played a nun in one scene, hes the
Tall one in case you are wondering, hes also a wealth of information on the film as well, and at a scene at the end of the film, where they are moving off into the sunset, john tells us that a man 100 year old vincent maracecchi who watches the tank go by, promptly dropped dead
Telly savalas, who during his down time was organising big money poker games with the crew, and won was instrumental in getting him a made to measure coffin, and money in the thousands for his family, its been said that under the tough guy exterior, he had the heart of hundreds
This thread could stretch for miles, so i wont bore you with the plot, but there is a book based on the film, with some extra bits you don't see in the film, by burt hirschield, its no longer in print and will set you back £50, clint also sings burning bridges on the soundtrack
Kellys heroes for me and a lot of people is a firm favourite for many reasons, its not an accurate war film if you like picking apart movies, its just fun to watch
You tube has don rickles ripping into clint on set, it hilarious, ive written to mgm, to clint, to donald as id like
To write a fanbook, so far no response, a lot of the cast have since passed away, so its a shame i cant get a response, but i hope this small thread is ok for you fans out there, you may know some of this info but if not, hope you enjoy, now for some quotes and pictures
Its a mother beautiful bridge
Crap!
Mulligan!!
Eating some cheese, drinking some wine, catching some rays
Hey joe
Knock it off with them negative ways
Its a film that is unique, a case of the right people at the right time, remove the politics of the time away, its a 2 hour quality film
