why share a photo like this; short answer is that im not sure why. i guess after traveling to and working in LA for 15 years i moved here and only after moving here started to understand the scope of the homeless crisis.. so to share a photo is to share some of that
another q i see in the replies is; 'what are you going to do about it' as in how am i personally going to contribute to correcting the crisis. another difficult question. i donate thats easy. but to truly impact change.. thats hard
ive sought out and had personal conversations with my city councilman and gotten to know wonderfully compassionate people and organizations like @invisiblepeople + @hardlynormal
i also try to expand my own understanding by following, here on twitter, some super progressive orgs and individuals who stand for the rights of the homeless and i follow super conservative perspectives who believe a heavier hand is needed to deal with the crisis
trying to grasp the spectrum of opinions of how change can begin has been helpful in forming my own thoughts but the larger feeling i have(which im ashamed of) is if $billions and so many ostensibly smart people cant begin to fix it wtf can i actually do. i dont believe that, but
there are a shitload of politics involved, a lot of unsavory actors and actions taken by those put in place to help mend the crisis. all of that aside its embarrassing for a place with such vast resources to celebrate any accomplishments when the streets look the way they do
last note. yesterday i tweeted a picture of a beautiful LA sunset. behind me as i took the picture was a tarp pinned to a chainlink fence with 2 grown men living under it. sharing the sunset felt dishonest without acknowledging the full setting. been thinkg about that a lot
