OK, I need to distract myself from <waves hand>.

So I'm going to do 🎶🧵

Please mute away.

@boltyboy & I got into it about his love for Queen. & yeah, while I love Under Pressure, I find the rest of the oeuvre pretentious & overwrought. But I also don't like the Beetles, & find much of the Boomer Classics boring.
3/

& *that*'s because I'm peak Gen X & I was inundated by the cultural artifacts of boomerism, "Classic Rock" & all the rest. in '83 I discovered the Violent Femmes & the Clash, & a different world opened for me.
4/

Late 80s were peak hip hop (PE, ATCQ, De La Soul) etc. & in my 20s, I did a great job of following music & discovering new artists, adding Nick Cave, a bunch of 4AD bands, etc to my playlist & then came Nirvana
5/

But having kids put a damper on music discovery & I went a bit without having my finger on the pulse of new music. I had to rediscover, for example, the glory of Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.
6/

I resolved to stay current with music. Part of this is making my music diet 80% this current year. & look, as awesome as '83 was (I think I did a thread already on why '83 was The Greatest Ever), we should expect '21 to have awesome music too.

I follow new music podcasts, listen to a bunch of stuff, throw out a ton, and end up with some stuff I'd never have listened to otherwise. Would I have fallen in love with Lemonade or DAMN or TPAB or Car Seat Headrest without doing this?
8/

In '20, I discovered RTJ4, which I listen to on repeat & discover more in every time, LA Priest, Sault, Whim, Poppy, A. G. Cook, Burna Boy, Chicano Batman, Rina Sawayama, & loved the new Car Seat Headrest, Sylvan Esso, Grimes, & Waxahatchee albums
9/

So sometimes, I'll put on Joy Division or listen to the Birdwood Cage by The Wolfgang Press, or truly nostalgize myself with Violent Femmes eponymous, or play In the Aeroplane Over the Sea at maximum volume
10/

But mostly, I'm out there scouring new music podcasts & playlists, trying stuff out, listening to my 2021 playlist on repeat, & filtering to a best of 2021 list.

So who's the best boomer band?

Yawn.
