The fact that social media wasn’t designed with tools to prevent or minimize disinformation & hate speech means that all solutions we implement (always late) will always feel like they’re taking something away, rather than doing the right thing
There are tons of parallels here to work which is why in grad school when we looked at how to evaluate customer needs, we actually looked at the psychology of decision making and risk evaluation
But even if it’s late the the day, you have to do the right thing. You can’t just launch a spacecraft because it was built that way before you got there, you go back and make a sacrifice to make it work because spacecraft only work when all the parts work
It *feels* like a sacrifice, if you’re the person spending more money or having to cut mass or power to give it to another system, but in fact a broken spacecraft doesn’t even work for the folks who thought they were ok. It’s true for a country as well.
It’s another reason why in a spacecraft you try to make sure all the systems are represented at the *start* to make sure you don’t uncover something later.
