The average hotel worker in Jamaica can't afford to go on vacation in the countries that most of our tourists come from. We can't even easily visit neighbouring islands.

Tourists go to Europe to visit landmarks; they submit to authority and are humbled by looking at old buildings, big arches, and important statues.

Tourists come here to relax and get pampered; they are the authority. Do you think they care about our history and landmarks?

Look at the asymmetry in travel restrictions, also a dynamic of capital. Do you know how easy it is for Europeans or Americans to come here versus how difficult it is for us to visit their countries?

We get interrogated in their countries when we arrive. They get welcomed here like they own the place because our islands are products and we have to maintain customer service. Our people twist up their tongues to speak "properly" to make them feel welcome.
