When it comes to a threat to our government locally, our biggest threat is actually on this week's #LawrenceCityComm agenda! This week's work session is discussion regarding the election of mayor. They've left it pretty open for discussion/disaster. 1/? https://lawrenceks.civicweb.net/document/57941/Discussion%20regarding%20directly%20elected%20Mayor..pdf?handle=39B860D0DE9A4991992206FF3BFCDE54
Staff has included info such as what forms of govt other cities use and info about districting. Personally I'm against changing things, ESPECIALLY districting! If we went to districts, then at that point I'd just want to combine city and county and go with 6 districts and a mayor
I'm afraid with districting it might give NIMBYs more power. With a protest petition, 2/3rds of a vote is needed for something to pass. So if 2 out of 5 vote no then it doesn't pass. By combining city and county we could go to a 7 member board.
2 out of 7 could vote no but 5 votes would still be a supermajority. In my opinion, I think the lower the number of total commissioners, the better the chance the nimby's to stop a supermajority needed vote. With districting, it allows nimby's to put more pressure on their rep.
So it makes it easier for them to get a vote from their rep, but it would make it harder for them to get votes from other commissioners who would be doing what's best for the town. But sometimes u get a commissioner who might not agree with the others.
But I think the more commissioners, the more likely you'd be having them vote for what's best for the town and not in special interest. I'm assuming on the idea the bigger the sample size, the greater the chances for it being a more accurate reflection of the population?
Plus before the mayor brought it up, the only talk I had heard from wanting districts was from non-LFK wanting the county commission expanded to ensure there could be someone representing a district not from lawrence. So if we did go to districting, i might be for city/county.
BUT, I'm not for changing our elections. I want 3 out of 5 members up for election every 2 years and for us to be voting for the three candidates we want to serve. As of now if i talk other stuff, it's just exploring options to make things not as bad if we go thru with this 😠
