Id love to red more Sci-fi books where transness is a part of the world and medical transition has advanced but where its not hand-waved as just accepted. More transness that is still complicated and messy in the future.
The two reasons I tend to jump off books where its just like casually part of the world and nothing is ever wrong with trans characters is because thats not my experience. My gender is constructed deliberately in the face of adversity and in connection with community.
But characters in worlds where transition can happen with a simple trip to the medics or where trans characters exist along cis characters I cannot help but think, where is this characters community, how is this characters gender constructed??? They tend to exist in isolation.
The other reason is that often this lets trans characters exist seamlessly as part of empire. Trans characters exist as part of royal guards, or as invading and occupying soldiers, or even as princes. Trans people seamlessly become part of the crimes committed.
Right now there are trans people who are complicit in acts of empire, in war crimes, in our current hegemony. But that doesn't mean these are the only trans characters I want to see in sci-fi. Where are my trans characters who's gender is constructed _against_ the norm.
