What many fail to understand is that the role of an educator isn’t just to guard the status quo and stroke young egos. IT IS ALSO OUR JOB to advise, to warn, and to *correct.*
When the far right comes for Black educators, it’s not just because they think we aren’t qualified for our jobs. It is an attack against who gets to be an arbiter of knowledge AND who gets to advise, warn, and correct White people.
It was all fun and games in the job I currently hold until I attempted to give any kind of feedback at all. And then it was very much “who the hell are you?” Keep in mind I came to this place 13 years into my career as an educator...
That is the negative energy that Black teachers and professors get from not only our charges, but also this entire culture. “Who are you to tell me?” Now that I’m into my third decade of the profession, I need everyone to know exactly where they can go with all that mess.
