There's a saying that if you're not paying for a product, you ARE the product being sold. That is, your attention and your time are valuable.
It's no longer a question of WHO has your data, but why and what they're doing with it.

Facebook has already demonstrated it's ability to sway and manipulate users. The first indication of such manipulation came in 2014, when they selected 600,000 users to see if they could make them feel happy or sad. This was done by controlling what they scrolled through,
using negative or positive news, then observing the change in their emotions. The results were sadly, successful.
