If I could have sorted out SLA, knowing what I know now, a thread. #LEL
Single vs group rooms. Having seen the disadvantages of single rooms across the board I maintain firmly in the mixed group. You should start life in a 4 person room with some caveats. If you are a late joiner and clearly a bit long in the tooth for young shenanigans, there
Ideally should be the option to upgrade you. Other than that you can go to a single bunk on promotion or after a year or so depending on your affinity to manage yourself. Yes, so basically how most camps were set up before with the difference that the ratio of group rooms to bunk
Will be different. The 4 person rooms should essentially be single bunks without doors, this will offer some degree of privacy without having to barricade yourself in with lockers. I don't see why you still couldn't offer an ensuite fascility, even with the group room.
Cooking facilities, I would have placed in a seperate building close to the accomodation with somewhere to eat the food you have cooked. Have fridge facilities with lockable cages to stop drink related mini pizza thefts. This set up would no doubt encourage group cooking and
Socialising. It being slightly seperate from the block would decrease the risk to life from fires. You could also have a cctv linked to the guardroom if you really wanted to add a level of assurance.
Having centralised cooking facilities would negate the ball ache of cleanliness by taking 10 seperate kitchenettes and make 1 area to check and keep on top of.
Rooms would have some variety in colour, a feature wall, just something to break up the magnolia dread.
Storage space should be looked at. I would have liked to see a half garage sized space for everyone. This would allow for kit storage and will allow you to maybe have a hobby that uses more kit than just running trainers. This would prevent mountain bikes being stored in
Corridors and give the soldiers a better lived experience. Space for a stand up paddle board, mtb, motorbike, fishing kit whatever else takes your fancy.
Finally, if we had the option there should definately be an old and bold block. I would have dreaded being a full screw awaiting for the youths to come back at 4 am and bang on the decks. It would give people an option to apply to live a more sedate life and wouldn't need to be
Rank based, just discretion based.

Outside spaces should have decent places to utilise during good weather. Benches, hammock mounts, bbq areas, shelters etc. We do this ok but can be hit and miss and is often an afterthought.
Just a few hap hazard thoughts on accommodation, I am sure there will be more views out there. Feel free to add yours 👇
Oh also I am a fan of having a balcony, suprising how it can make a room go from cell to all inclusive holiday vibe.
Further to this, we need to start thinking about electric car infrastructure. We know by 2030 non electric cars will no longer be sold, although hybrid will still feature we need to think about how we are going to charge our cars for the weekend commute.
An interesting bit of context is that the Australian Army essentially kick you out of SLA after a couple of years and expect you to source your own accommodation, I think they get a subsidiary but not sure it covers all of the cost.
