Ok my dear Texans that have never seen snow before. Driving tips from your friends up north! (A thread)
1. 4 wheel drive does not mean 4 wheel stop. Give yourself extra space to stop.
2. Don't mash the brakes. You shouldn't anyways, but just use gentle continual pressure.

3. Remember this mantra: start slow, stop slow. Don't gun it. You won't be very successful.
4. No sudden movements. If you jerk a movement, you're at a higher risk of sliding.
5. Turn into a slide. If your backend kicks out to the right, turn your wheels right. Etc.

6. Everyone has a different skill set and car condition. If you feel your backend start to wiggle, you might wanna slow it down.
7. Don't use your brights at night during snowfall. It highlights the flakes.
8. Be mindful of your surroundings and don't focus on the flakes.

8: focussing on the flakes can cause what's called snow hypnosis. You zone out.
9. If you find yourself on ice, don't hit the brakes. Let your engine slow you down and coast to a slower speed.
10. If you feel your car sliding, don't hit the brakes! Look where you wanna go.

11. Be mindful of all wheel drive. Like 4 WD it can give a false sense of security. It 'helps' but not when you're stopping.
12. This shouldn't need saying but it's getting said. PUT THE PHONE DOWN ENTIRELY. Go hands free. Don't touch your phone. Use a headset for calls.

13. Increase your following distance by up to 5 or 6 seconds (or more) depending on the weather.
14. Carry weight in the back to help with traction. Sand, cat litter, etc. I've done anywhere between 50 lb to 400lb depending on what I was driving.

15. Carry these items with you: blanket, flare, shovel, extra car litter (sprinkle beneath tires for added traction if you get stuck) flashlight, and a tow strap.
16. Make sure your car has plenty of gas.
17. Don't panic of your tire pressure light comes on. -continued

17. Air shrinks in the cold, thus reducing the air pressure in your tires. This is normal.
18. Use common courtesy and common sense. Stay focussed, put all distractions down, and do as you need to.
I know there's more but that's a start. Stay frosty!

19. Ok I'm going to repeat one because driving around here I see it far too much and important things need repeating.
