Saskatchewan,

We are desperate as a people with a history of neighbourly compassion, unity and strength to counter the rhetoric imposed on us in these times.

So what do we do?

👇
1. Bring those closer in our immediate circles that display fanaticism. This extends to those that are partisan to specific political modalities. Those susceptible to subtle messaging or propaganda gravitate toward the ideas due to a misplaced sense of belonging.
Open a new door.
2. Once that door is open be the one to hold the space. Let them talk and remain engaged especially in the face of the repeated rhetoric. Find the nuances which can be connected on and use those points to guide the conversation to logical alternative outlooks.
3. Experiences transcend facts. Even we don't know what is true anymore - but there is no denying the alchemy of a visceral experience. Be the one to hunt for that experience and offer it from a genuine place of connection. The most powerful are cultural celebrations.
4. Encourage creation. This can be ANYTHING. Creation is the gateway to self-expression and self-expression is a slippery slope to self-worth. It doesn't have to be "artistic" even though it is - I've had more positive political convos welding or building fence...
than I ever have writing a song or in areas of the "finer arts".

However, art is transcendent. Especially if it is created from a place of transcendence. So with that said...
5. Artists, create with intent! The most powerful pieces in history are subversive statements. Politicians aren't the only ones allowed to embed subtleties - this works both ways and it's effective. Use the language of those you hope to connect and "upload emotion" into the work.
6. Long game, long game, long game. Bring those susceptible in and stay with it. Changing one mindset through empathy, understanding and love is a job complete.

Rhetoric works because people are hurt.

Be a part of the healing and you are part of the conversion.
