I just mentioned this in a comment elsewhere, but I really think modern conservatism can be best defined by its retreat from consequences. And that retreat is only amplifying the problems they’re running away from. (1 / until I get hungry)
The place where I initially commented was re: Parler. Online conservatives’ behavior was so consistently reprehensible — racist, violent, abusive, etc. — that they were running into platform policies and moderation. Rather than acknowledging their behavior, they ran to Parler.
They pushed the lies about election theft, and now their followers think the election was stolen. Rather than just admitting they’re lying, they retreat more and push for recounts, court hearings, etc. And when they lose, the conspiracy only grows! (3 / ... )
So then you get outlets like @OWHopinion pushing suggestions like commissions to investigate irregularities and restore faith in our elections. This inherently validates the lies, runs from them, and then makes them stronger. (4/ ...)
And the whole reaction to the insurrection at the Capitol! The very politicians who have pushed the lies that deluded these people are now running from any consequences, continuing the lies, and putting all burden on Democrats. (5 / ... )
When I was a teenager cutting thistles in a pasture listening to Rush Limbaugh, he would go on and on about Republicans being the party of personal responsibility. I don’t know how we get out of this until they take responsibility for something. Lying and retreat isn’t working.
