I've been thinking a lot about this. And I think Hawley's statement about how a private publisher's decision not to publish his book is "a direct assault on the First Amendment" is yet another indication of just how dangerous he really is.

To begin, Hawley knows this is wrong. The 1st Amendment doesn't apply to private publishers. This isn't a close call, or interesting issue. It's just straight wrong.
I'm not saying Hawley knows better 'cause he's got fancy degrees & clerkships. This is basic, basic stuff. /2

So he knows he's lying to people. Misleading them. To whip up anger. It's easily falsifiable. He knew he was lying--straight up--about the law. And he didn't care.
Why?
Because he thinks it serves him politically. He wants more and more and more power. /3

And he's doing this KNOWING it will spur anger. He said this AFTER the Capitol was taken over by armed insurrectionists (spurred on by his bad-faith stunt to object to certification of the Electoral College).

I recognize politicians (& lawyers) sometimes distill complexities so that they're digestible to non-subject experts.
This ain't that.
He didn't say "I worry this is in tension with our core values of free expression."

And he did it on Twitter, where his bio leads with--wait for it--"constitutional lawyer."
He's lying to people. Using his authority to whip people into a frenzy into believing that there is some broader assault on the Constitution.

Josh Hawley's shown us, unequivocally, who he is. He has no place in a system committed to democracy, or the rule of law. He's an enduring danger as long as he holds office.
