This a better photo, but it’s also a surprising choice for a female politician. It’s soft (creamy backdrop, suit color, suit fabrication), audaciously so. She’s more comfortable than most are, coloring outside the expected lines of self presentation for a woman in her position.
The profile is so well done. She’s correctly referred to as a neoliberal, her rhetoric and actions are compared and considered, and the writing’s just good. Which, duh, considering the writer.
I know this photo of KH is not the most pressing matter of the day/ week/ month. But I love talking about this stuff! Clothes and photos of powerful figures communicate so much. It’s fun to try to figure out the creator’s intentions.
One more note about KH being washed out. Photog has taken plenty of gorgeous photos of ppl of all skin tones, but these two photos show women of similar skin tone to KH not washed out at all. Beyo’s literally in front of the same background (which hmmm).
I believe these were taken outside (no idea about KH), and B and Z’s dresses are both glittery, which may have affected overall lighting choices. But I wonder if KH’s coloring is the result of the photog or the Vogue team. I’m just a layperson, but I’m leaning toward the latter.
Okay okay one last thought about this yellow backdrop. What was behind the choice to use the same yellow backdrop from Beyoncé’s shoot? The rollout for that shoot was huge and that particular photo was acquired by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Weird choice.
