Some thoughts about what accountability toward unity might look like:
1) it starts by recognizing compassionately the humanity of the enemy
2) part of the recognition of that humanity is that they can and should take responsibility for harm
3) if people have used power unjustly or to harm, removing them from having that power is one way of establishing just relations
4) such removal can and should be aimed toward a real unity, which requires truth-telling about the unjust power relations and changing those relations
Removal of power doesn’t have to be vindictive nor punishment.

Ideally accountability means people using their power rightly to repair the harm (Danielle Sered’s idea). But transforming unjust power relations over others is part of opening space for such right use of power
Demanding accountability and a change in power relations that enable harm is not in any way opposed to forgiveness or our desire to live a unified common life together (a desire I share!). We can demand accountability and also be willing to work together for the common good.
