It's rather sad how people flocked to Parler after the purge of Trump, et al. only to watch Google and Apple unceremoniously oust it from their app stores and Amazon (soon) out of their data center.
This is the future for the right. De-platformed, silenced, persecuted. Anything to the right of Mittens Romney treated like ardent "Nazism." Angel funders like @dbongino have to get serious and knowledgeable about platform security. The same old tactics of evasion no longer work.
Infrastructure, payment, domain security, all must be addressed at a fundamental level. The concept of alternative apps that take Big Tech infrastructure for granted will not survive long into the future.
But there is hope. We are organizing an effort that addresses these issues in a fundamental, security and privacy conscious way. Ground-up. No Big Tech in the stack, open source, standards compliant, free, and performant. @Gab is a good interim alternative, being self-hosted.
But how long before their lease-holder attacks them through some color-of-law twist? Can they effectively scale when they have to lease servers at great cost? What of the power bill? The list is long of things that could impede their mission.
We need to fundamentally rethink the internet in the era of walled gardens and censorship. It must be for everyone. It must be secure, available, open, and free of ideological constraint or it will not serve the needs of public discourse. My team is doing that.
