Pete Carroll can be a great head coach but that doesn’t mean he’s the right one for Russell Wilson at this stage of his career. He’s wasted another year of a top-5 QB because they are polar opposites philosophically. The best coaches adapt to their players strengths, Pete has not
The problem becomes, where does Seattle go from here? Do you actually move on from a good head coach that means so much to this organization and is beloved by most? Probably not.
Pete is best for a team with a great roster and a QB that is either limited or young. The plan is to win games 17-13, relying on that defense, and ensuring the offense doesn’t turn the ball over while passing the least amount in the NFL. Doing that when you have Russ? A disgrace.
And it’s especially a disgrace when you fail to draft well at key positions for that plan. Why are we still struggling to get a great running back in Seattle when they fall off trees around the league? How is the offensive line still an area of concern?
For what it’s worth, I couldn’t see Pete and Russ being separated from each other unless their relationship sours. Both are some of the most respected individuals at their position across the league, but that doesn’t mean they’re best suited for each other. We see it all the time
Was Movie 43 great because it had a star-studded cast? No. Get Cool with The Rock and John Travolta? Flopped. Pete was great for Russ when he was just entering the league and didn’t know his own greatness. That, mixed with a great roster, had us feeling like a dynasty was coming.
But Russ has outgrown Pete’s minimalistic ideology. He deserves to be on a team in the top 10 of pass play percentage. He deserves good offensive coordinators, run support, an o-line. He’s Russell freaking Wilson.
At the end of the day, I don’t see another Lombardi coming to Seattle with Russ and Pete both being there together ... and that’s okay. They’ve already shared more than enough successes. But now we’re wasting years of a terrific QB talent and it’s a shame to see.
