It will divide the GOP, undermine Fox News, keep the public mind focused and it comes at no cost to the Democrat control of all chambers.

Let's be clear. Impeachment is a moral and constitutional imperative now. The Republican President Donald Trump attempted a coup. Impeachment to remove such a man needs to be normalised for the sake of future American democracy.

But impeachment is also cunning.

Impeachment might fly in the face of Biden's talk of working across parties but Biden said that stuff when he might not have Democrat majorities in all chambers.

Georgia means he now does. So Democrats don't need Republicans anymore.

Which means it's time to crush them.

Impeachment this time is hell for the @GOP. This isn't technical stuff about foreign collusion. It was a televised coup.

Some will defend Trump, others will alienate his voters by standing up for America.

That split will last and splits are always punished by voters too.

Impeachment will reveal the scale of the GOP's radical fascist wing - while the American public like to think themselves conservative.

Worse still GOP News (Fox News) is facing disaster. A split in Republicans is a split in its audience. And it will lose one side or other.

So impeachment sets the Republicans on a path to disastrous splits instead of retrenchment or healing. It sends a message that Democrats support law and order. And it does nothing to jeopardise Democrat control of all houses.
