I got a response from “Parnassus Neighborhood Coalition” that sent these emails to the entire city with no identifying information about who they are, yesterday, that opposed the @UCSFHospitals expansion at Parnassus.
They say they applied for a Master Voter File from SF Elections and received permission as a “Non-Profit Neighborhood Organization.”
The problem with this for me is that there’s no “Non-Profit Neighborhood Organization” listed as a Permissible Use for the voter information they used. Nothing even close to that use.
My guess (because they haven’t responded to my last email yet) is that this is being considered a campaign or political use of this data. That’s all fine and great - but there’s not a single disclosure in the email or on their website identify any of this.
It shouldn’t have taken *me* over two hours, with help, to figure out who is involved in this campaign, and who is funding the use of my information I didn’t opt into, nor did the entire City and County of San Francisco.
Is this an ethics violation? Maybe. Do I have time to deal with this? No.
I, along with the majority of voters in SF, have supported and passed numerous measures to increase information disclosed to the public in these instances, and to get rid of dark money and provide more transparency around these things.
Do better.
