During the WV Teachers’ strikes, we often waited hours in orderly security lines to gain access to the WV Capitol building. Once admitted we packed into the house and senate galleries and sat in silence.

There was chanting and cheering in the halls outside both chambers, but
no vandalism, no walls were breached, no windows were shattered. At the close of the day teachers stayed & picked up trash & cleaned up the Capitol bathrooms.
We listened silently while lawmakers debated our profession, some openly insulting the red clad masses in the galleries.
And still we followed the rules, respecting the laws of our state and the lawmakers our state elected.
Once during the 2018 work stoppage, a bill was presented about “respect in the workplace” —this was after teachers had been publicly insulted by the Gov. and many GOP lawmakers.
I was sitting in the House gallery & when the bill was mentioned, I giggled—an exasperated, contemptuous giggle of derision. I didn’t mean to giggle, but it was just SO RIDICULOUS to hear these men talk about respecting each other in the workplace after months of teacher bashing.
Immediately the House speaker gaveled the entire chamber and GLARED at me. Security came to my row and indicated if I made another sound I would be removed. Several GOP lawmakers frowned in my direction.

(I do remember @WVUFLU grinning up at me.)
The whole proceeding came to halt to glare at me FOR A GIGGLE.

What happened in our US Capitol last week was not a protest. It was not democracy in action. It was an attack. A treasonous attack fueled by conspiracies and white supremacy.
I was nearly removed for giggling.

Wednesday’s domestic terrorists were given access to the grounds.

Stop letting people call it a protest. Stop letting people make comparisons to movements like educators strikes, March for Our Lives, and BLM.

There is no comparison.
