It would cost the 400 richest Americans less than 5% of their collective wealth to lift every American out of poverty. If they had their wealth redistributed, it could change the course of the lives of every human being on the planet, and they would all STILL be billionaires.
On July 20th, Jeff Bezos grew his wealth by 13 billion dollars in a single day. It would cost 9 billion dollars to cover chemotherapy treatment for every cancer patient for an entire year. At what point are we allowed to define their wealth hoarding as criminal negligence?
If someone was on fire and you were standing next to them holding a bucket of water, wouldn’t your instinct be to help them? If you chose not to, and just hoarded that water while someone burned and died next to you, wouldn’t you be charged with second-degree manslaughter?
What if you had 200 billion buckets of water? What if it would cost you an undetectable fraction of your water buckets to put out that fire? What if you obtained that water through means of questionable legality? Wouldn’t the reasonable conclusion be that you’re a criminal?
