There's nothing like classic Tomb Raider. These games often get a bad rap these days for their outdated controls and design (and, of course, the obvious objectification). But if you understand what they’re going for, they’re still something quite special.
They’re not fast-paced thrill rides like Uncharted. They’re about slow-paced exploration, being isolated in huge, lonely environments as you travel deeper and deeper into the remnants of ancient civilisations. And at what they do, there's little else that comes close.
The controls may seem stiff and janky compared to modern games, but they offer precision and encourage a methodical approach. It's about reading your environment and working out the precise jumps, runs, grabs and climbs you need to find the next secret. Every move needs thought.
That said, TR3's a bit of a mixed bag. It has some of the most atmospheric, majestic levels in the series, but also lots of filler. Core were forced to make these games on a yearly schedule, and here it starts to show. I’ve never actually finished it, despite multiple attempts.
