Starmer could take a holding position: we're in the middle of a pandemic, we don't know how this Deal will work, we will examine consequences of what's happening, we will examine a case for Freedom of Movement

Starmer - consistent with voting for the Deal - is hoping EU issues simply go away, because they are too hot for Labour to handle, because of the party's internal dysfunction, and the fragility of its voter coalition.

Whether Starmer likes it or not, EU questions will not go away. Real problems for business, people wanting to travel, musicians etc., will not disappear. The consequences of ending Freedom of Movement will not disappear.

If Starmer doesn't grasp these issues, other parties will - the SNP already are, and are bashing Labour even more in Scotland as a result. Plaid Cymru are starting to do the same in Wales.
The Lib Dems and Greens, if given a hearing, will do the same in England.

Political activists who do have the mind-space to listen to him are and go "why should we bother with this rubbish?"
