In advance of the publication of the final report of the Commission of Inquiry, an editorial in @Independent_ie states “it will be difficult also for the 57,000 children born in these homes who live today, thankfully, in a far more tolerant and liberal Ireland.”
this completely overlooks and diminishes the battle Adoptees have had for several decades with ‘liberal’ Ireland and our ‘liberal’ government to access the most basic of information. It diminishes the effects that adoptees live with such as lack of access to biological health
It diminishes the shame and stigma still felt by adoptees today, in ‘liberal’ Ireland simply for being adopted. It also fails to mention that the counselling service does not extend to all adoptees, birth parents and survivors affected by this issue, but only extends to those
who went thro the Institutions investigated by the Commission. We have repeatedly asked @rodericogorman @MichealMartinTD to extend counselling service to include all adoptees, all birth parents and all survivors @WhitmoreJen @Kathleensf1
We have repeatedly asked that stakeholders affected but not included in the Commissions remit be allowed input into the way forward. The impacts, both physical and mental, of adoption are not limited to specific institutions but rather extend to all adoptees, birth parents and
survivors. To proceed further without including all possible input from those who have already been marginalised within an already marginalised cohort would be to repeat the failings of past governments, @rodericogorman @MichealMartinTD We do not want decisions made regarding
Archives or repositories without full and open consultation with all stakeholders. Any repositories for files or information must be Adoptee/Survivor led with an emphasis on education and preserving our history with priority access for Adoptees/Survivors and our children.
We are more than aware of the value of our stories, our files and our history, we are the custodians of our past, we wish to preserve these for future generations, we want the societal context understood. We want our history taught in schools and universities @rodericogorman
We need to build in legislation that allows Adoptees to access our own information, allowing access to our own information within a formalised government department which is transparent and accountable @MichealMartinTD @rodericogorman @WhitmoreJen @Kathleensf1
The history regarding this matter is one of an over reliance and dependence on professional opinions who felt that the ‘closed’ adoption system and complete legal severance from their biological kin, heritage and medical history was ‘best’ for illegitimate children
Adoptees, birth parents and survivors who have lived with closed adoption, a system that a recent open policy debate into open adoption for under 18’s ‘struggled’ to find ‘any benefits’ of closed adoption’ are the experts - it is their voices & stories that needs to be heard
We need a State apology, for Adoptees and Birth Parents, for the policies of forced and coercive adoption @MichealMartinTD @rodericogorman it left us, as a nation, bereft. It is a loss that affects us all and one has yet to be faced up to fully. @MichealMartinTD @rodericogorman
Thank you to the nearly 200,000 people who have already supported our campaign petition, who sent nearly 50,000 emails, made over 500 phone calls demanding that the Government #RepealTheSeal for all Adoptees who live with this system. We are at the threshold, we need to ensure
That ‘nothing about us, without us’ is exactly that and that all Adoptees, Birth Parents and Survivors are consulted, allowed an input on the way forward and given access to their own information. @rodericogorman @MichealMartinTD @WhitmoreJen @Kathleensf1
