Exmoor ponies are well camouflaged in their natural habitat (wetland & heathland). They are bay with Pangaré colouring which gives them their distinctive muzzle, eye ring, & lighter belly. They blend into their surroundings perfectly #gonative @RBSTrarebreeds @cumbriawildlife
True dun colouring is not present in Exmoor ponies. Dun is cited as an indication the breed is primitive. Indeed, “primitive” dun colouring is often given as a reason for importing Konik ponies over our natives - even though dun exists in many of our native breeds like highlands
The Exmoor pony does not have the dun gene, and yet they are often considered one of the most primitive looking ponies in Europe. Please can we stop using the dun gene as a reason to import and use foreign breeds @RBSTrarebreeds @RareBreedChris
