Signal is the new buzz word now. But, what does it represent - in the sense, why do you want to adopt it? I can cite three reasons
1. Proof yourself from targeted advertising
2. Get away from Big Tech and have more space to maneuvre
3. Security
If it's the first two which is your aim, it can be anything. But, if it is the third one, I am not exactly sure. Have a look at the antecedents of Signal, for example. Signal started as Whisper Systems with RedPhone and Textsecure - encrypted voice calling and texting apps.
In 2011, Twitter acquired the company. Cost of deal undisclosed. Redphone which was one of the mainstay of communication from inside restricted dictatorships with outside world was made unavailable immediately after. One of the first red flags.
Now that Redphone scrapping hurt Egyptian Revolution, who was behind it's scrapping? Immediately after, TextSecure was released as opensource followed by RedPhone.
Something happened and Moxie Marlinspike, one of the main brains behind Whisper Systems left the company to found Open Whisper Systems. This clubbed RedPhone and TextSecure into Signal.
This Signal Protocol which they developed, Marlinspike helped integrate into WhatsApp, Facebook, Google, Skype and everything. In 2016, the founder of WhatsApp, Brian Acton joined Open Whisper after Facebook acquired WhatsApp. OWS became Signal Foundation with Marlinspike as CEO.
But, this guy Marlinspike is partly anti-establishment and was harassed by American authorities many a time - his hardware confiscated, court cases, everything.
So, the question is this. He runs a major open-source protocol but which is used by everybody except Telegram(Telegram uses MTProto). He helped everyone implement the protocol but is partly anti-establishment and a marked man.
He and his backer are people with big bucks and probably can't be bought but he has a very good software which can be sold. So, if it's privacy, how secure is the software? Today everything is fine. Tomorrow is the question.
Three big backers. The third one is a surprise. Is he serious or is he trolling?
A decent discussion over the topic.
Reason I say focus on present and not on future. Because there is no way you can stop someone from buying a product and changing the end to end encryption. Or sending it RedPhone way. What are the best products in your view which can't be taken over?
And even more pertinently, who are the backers of Signal Foundation?
During George Floyd Protests, Twitter and Signal were hand in hand. Now, are both of them on the same side or on the opposite sides? If both are on the same side, what changed and if both are on opposite sides, what changed for Twitter?
Another Red Flag. Signal is not compromised. What's compromised is the operating system of the phone in which Signal is installed.
