I spent a weekend with a similar far-right “militia,” the 3 Percenters’ Alabama chapter in 2017. They did the same military cosplay. They ran “urban combat drills” w/ live ammo. They drank heavily & mishandled weapons. They were incompetent, angry, misinformed & dangerous. 1/7 https://twitter.com/redtraccoon/status/1348116646901264384
It’s terrifying to imagine large hordes of these “militia” members gathering in public, armed to the teeth. Especially if they’re making the kinds of threats & claims so many have made online in recent days. And especially not in light of what happened this past week in D.C. 2/7
A key point to note is how dangerously incompetent some of these “militias” are. It doesn’t take much to “start a militia.” Sometimes it’s just a bunch of untrained guys w/ extreme views & lots of guns looking for an outlet, camaraderie & sense of working twd a political goal 3/7
Over 2 days, @IanHoppe & I watched a 3%er who claimed to be an Army veteran accidentally shoot a live round into the ground next to his foot w/ ~15 people nearby. They blew up stuff w/ Tannerite for no reason while taking essentially no precautions. They spewed racist vitriol 4/7
They chugged liquor for hours & slept in a tiny wooden bldg full of live ammo & explosives feet from a large indoor propane fire. Two passed out drunk - one on a toilet and one in the cold next to another open fire. They slept hours past their intended training start time. 5/7
This is the disturbing and distressing reality of some of the “militia” groups that had a presence at the US Capitol on Wednesday and have been descending on state houses from Georgia to Kentucky in recent days. 6/7
