Tonight I’m reading that as Trump tries to light the constitution on fire, and his minions brought napalm to actually light the Capitol on fire, @MaricopaGOP and @AZGOP want to censure @cindymccain bc she supported the other guy and thought treason was bad and gay is okay.
For those unaware, the tribal adherence to dogma and the person of Trump, and the party’s collective refusal to acknowledge or admit his failures, is very reminiscent of the way Rs whitewashed Reagan after Iran-Contra.
And for those who don’t remember Iran-Contra, Reagan came into office having negotiated with Iran (Iran) to DELAY RELEASING AMERICAN HOSTAGES IN EXCHANGE FOR WEAPONS, and laundered the money by paying for civil wars in South America (Contra) which Congress forbade him to do.
Crazy illegal, right? Well, he goes on TV and does his Gipper routine and acts like the whole thing just snuck up on him and hereafter has been canonized by the Republican Party. Most of them don’t know he ever did these things and certainly wouldn’t believe it if you told them.
If they did, they’d say he fought against communism and for freedom, but they’d never admit he shredded the constitution and broke the law to cover up his previous crime of undermining the government of the United States for politics at the expense of hostages and their families.
That whitewashing was accomplished the same way they’re trying to do with Trump rn. Rejecting reality. Waving it away. The problem is that Trump’s crimes and failures are far greater in size and severity, have come in 4 years not 8, and are threatening our entire society NOW.
Reagan made a mess and then Barr helped him stuff the skeletons in the closet at the end of 41’s term. There’s nobody to clean up for Trump now and Republicans don’t know how to confess and repent. They don’t know how to be redeemed by their countrymen.
Which is why they’ve lost their gd minds.

What I’m saying is, they don’t want unity. They want impunity. They want absolution. They want you to forget they screwed the pooch and pretend it never happened and be surprised next time they do it.
