I've been in the political world for almost a decade. There are very few pundits (if any, these days) with any sort of balls. They're all like reeds in the wind, swaying whichever way the cable news appearances prefer, feigning moral uprightness instead of standing on principle.
Too many people are too afraid of being marked as part of the fringe, too scared to have any conviction or principle, because it might kill their chances of media hits because *that's* what they care about -- their own celebrity.
The pathetic self-righteousness of so many on the right and the compulsion to scoff at people who love their country over any political party is truly disgraceful. Treating *anyone* that way is unacceptable.
Conservatism is dead. Much as I wanted it to be a thing, it never caught on. Probably because it had a fundamental misunderstanding of *real* people and their daily struggles.
The GOP as we knew it in the pre-Trump days is dead. Especially when the pundit-class can't seem to stand the people who voted for President Trump. Good luck with that coalition.
The insistence on pushing the "others" (read: Trump Supporters) away and out of the party because they don't do things the way they were always done is just gross. It's elitist, stubborn, and foolish.
I was never a Trump supporter. I was adamantly anti-Trump in 2016. This is well catalogued on the blog and even here on Twitter. But I have talked to enough Trump supporters to know that these are people who love our country as much as they love themselves.
And no I'm not condoning anything that happened this last week, nor am I excusing it, nor am I condoning Trump, who I really ended up not minding and outside of the constant media criticism, had a pretty boring presidency.
I've worked for campaigns, in various orgs. There are plenty of good people doing great things. And you'll probably never know who they are because they don't care about that. They just do the work. Hoping to make a difference.
I'm done with the self-righteousness that has taken over ever facet of the right. If that's what I'm after, I can get that on the left, too.
In everything we do, we ought to operate with grace, consideration, empathy, and kindness. That exists nowhere in our political structure. There isn't a shred of actual humanity left there.
The parties can destroy themselves. And at this point, they should. What good are they to us, the people, anyway? Yes, I understand ground game and infrastructure blah blah blah, but... to what end?
Do not be afraid to ask the questions the media is not asking. Do not be afraid to speak up. No one is going to speak up for you. You have to do it for yourself.
