Thread on Ahiru no Sora's first 50 episodes/140 manga chapters and why I love it so much. Spoilers kept to a minimum
Ahiru no Sora is a basketball anime/manga written by Takeshi Hinata. The anime is Okayish/enjoyable, it's not too crazy and it lacks in animation despite its release in 2019. The manga is a better experience for the story and world building. The anime has good soundtracks though
Comparing Ahiru no Sora to Slam Dunk, I'd objectively rate them about equal, although ahiru has my personal advantage. The characters and better written and more fleshed out than Slam Dunk, while Antagonists are underwhelming unlike Slam Dunk. Art aside, Ahiru has a better story
Sora is a very well written MC aswell, his struggles in the story are made up for with his abilities. His development is very good and his faults are little. Personally I'd give sora a 9/10
Side characters are done amazingly aswell. Chiaki has some of the best writing if seen for a character, his design is unique and he probably is the best character in the series. Other characters like Nanao are still amazing even with less writing. Designs are amazing and fitting
Ahiru has one of the best first arcs I've seen. Sora turning a group of delinquents into a legitimate basketball team was really cool. the Introduction of characters during the first arc and them reigniting their passion for basketball was better written than most sports anime
Development in characters is clear after each match they play. Even little details that shouldn't matter are changed as the story progresses on that I really appreciate. It makes the manga have a more realistic feel when tiny and insignificant things are given attention
Antagonists are okay compared to Slam Dunk, but they are by no means bad. Seeing each view team gives the match a more important and heavier feel. u feel sympathetic to both protagonists and antagonists A good basketball manga should be like that. It makes 2 teams clashing better
Plot devices are used PERFECTLY. The use of cliffhangers, false endings, flashbacks, foreshadowing etc. are really really good. During games the amount of play time and flashback time are balanced. it doesn't feel too focused on one side. The use of Yuka in the story is amazing
The anime has really good visuals and a amazing Soundtrack aswell. As stated before, it lacks in animation a bit, but it's made up with visuals and music. The manga art has that gritty basketball feel to it aswell. It's not amazing like inoue with slam dunk, but definitely good
People will say "They only lose games, the main characters suck at the game" but miss the point of the manga and story. Without looking at the bigger picture you won't realize the development during games, and the progress the protagonists make during the story.
Dynamics between protagonists and the other teams are GOOD aswell. Sometimes there are fights and sometimes they are tight. With constant mood changes it feels real. Unexpected circumstances become the team yet they still make it through. Real teamwork is often seen aswell.
it was hard to talk about this series without spoilers but I really do truly love this series. I've always been playing basketball but this manga makes me want to be better or sum shit lol
