Hard to see what choice AWS has here. Multiple attempts to get Parler to remove violent content, including plans to assassinate public figures, journalists, professional athletes, etc. Parler refused or delayed, then came up with a “volunteer” panel to moderate. https://twitter.com/buzzfeednews/status/1348089793213837319
This seems to be a common refrain re: Parler. It wants to serve as an alternative social media platform but lacks all the guardrails existing platforms have and have demonstrated an unwillingness to abide by the TOS of its hosts/stores.
You can make an argument that social media sites don’t equally enforce these rules. Indeed, there is zero justification for CCP and the ayatollah having this platform, and they must be removed.
But app developers must follow TOS of its hosts and the stores where they “sell” (even if for free) their apps. Some of those rules are as benign as requiring an Apple ID login option for users. Others are moderating content that is dangerous.
The solution to all of Parler’s problems is to remove its violent content. AWS, Google and Apple all gave them plenty of warning to do so. In AWS’s case, they gave them specific cases of violence and asked them to remove it. They refused.
I understand the frustration with Big Tech, a lot justified. But, it’s not as though this is a surprise to Parler. Again, multiple requests citing very specific cases for removal. That’s all they had to do. It’s what’s expected of other social media platforms.
