Our institutions were breached long before what happened on Capitol Hill on 1/6.
They were breached when warnings of Trump's racism were not taken seriously.
They were breached when our media published glowing profiles of white supremacists with cute haircuts.

It is easy to point at Trump and GOP politicians for what happened.
But every glowing profile of "the white supremacist next door", every attempt to "both sides" with people who hold racist, violent views, was a breach into our democracy, allowed by "liberal" media.

Like those black Capitol Hill officers, black journalists tried to warn, defend, and speak out against the creeping and violent threat.
Black journalists were left out to dry, scolded, ignored, or even fired by white colleagues for sounding the alarms about white supremacy.

I will never forget, listening aghast, while Jason Kessler, the founder of the Unite The Right rally was allowed to air his views, and rank the intelligence of the races live on NPR: https://www.npr.org/2018/08/10/637390626/a-year-after-charlottesville-unite-the-right-rally-will-be-held-in-d-c
The breaches came in the forms of glowing profiles of racists like like Richard Spencer, about how well dressed he was, how articulate he was, how great his hair was, and how he was trying to make racism cool again. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/10/richard-spencer-trump-alt-right-white-nationalist/
Black women tried to prevent the Trumpist breach.
Maxine Waters called for his impeachment in 2017.
@jemelehill caught hell for calling Trump a White Supremacist.
Kamala Harris long argued that Trump should be removed from Twitter.
White America didn't want to hear it.

My industry needs to reflect on its culpability in what happened on 1/6.
Every glowing profile, book deal, TV analyst gig, Harvard fellowship, Atlantic Ideas festival spots, or social media platform given to the architects of Trumpism and white supremacy helped get us here.

What happened at Capitol Hill hurts for so many black people because we keep putting ourselves on the line to try to keep America from destroying itself, and us with it.
Not here for the "I'm so sorry about white people", guilt.
Not here for the "Not all white people" tweets.
What we need from white people is a commitment to dismantle and abolish white supremacy so we ALL can be free from this violence.
But y'all arent ready.
