the either/or logical fallacy in this fucking argument is rooted in white supremacy culture. the idea that if you make a mistake then you ARE a mistake is an internal one and i really, truly urge whoever is behind this to get well, and soon. https://twitter.com/thefanficpolice/status/1348064329489375236
since we need a refresher on the difference between the alt-right (borne out of white people being told that they are hurting people and should change—sound familiar) which just led a violent insurrection on the steps of the mfing capitol that left 5 people DEAD... here we go!
first of all, identity politics are dead. i don't care who the fuck is behind this account. white supremacy culture affects ALL of us, and is damaging to both white people and BIPOC. raise ur hand if you've been personally victimized by a pick me poc [the whole crowd stands up]
let's start with PERFECTIONISM. whiteness asserts that there is ONE perfect form, one answer, one ideal and anything that deviates is wrong/immoral/dirty. consequence? inability to cope with conflict and mistakes. internalizing mistakes as a finite and permanent state.
if someone points out a mistake or asks you to deal with ways your actions have caused PAIN, it is not an indictment on your humanity. but your reaction tells a story. when the reaction is something like this, what's that story? that's your question to answer.
secondly, DEFENSIVENESS. borne out of a need to DEFEND a supreme position. born out of a need to maintain a status quo that benefits whiteness, either out of familiarity or out of a desire to gain proximity to whiteness.
what are you defending? why are you resistant to change? who does your resistance to change benefit? what structures does it benefit to maintain the status quo? again, your questions to answer. you might come up with answers that lead you to decide NOT to change! ok! but think.
thirdly, ONE RIGHT WAY. ironically, this is the lens that they're clearly receiving criticism, but it's in fact a REACTION to the internalized white supremacist ideal that there is ONE RIGHT WAY to do something. that ANY critique means that there is something wrong with them.
every person in this discussion that i have ever seen is extremely opposed to giving a list of 'right ways' to write fic, because it diminishes the humanity of the people part of the cultures that we write about! there is no one right way. there is no litmus test. #riptylerrule
FOURTHLY (i swear i'm almost done), THE RIGHT TO COMFORT AND FEAR OF OPEN CONFLICT. when the consequence of being wrong is terminal, of course there's a fear of open conflict and a deep entitlement to comfort.
if you are looking to build a world outside of white supremacy, power does not have a right to comfort. it is deeply uncomfortable to learn. it is hard to grapple with being the cause of harm. but lord, we have to. we have to fight & heal & learn. otherwise, there's no horizon.
so clearly this is beyond fucking "FAN FICTION"!!!!!!!!! AND I REITERATE: GET WELL!!!! GET. WELL. SOON. please read this incredible resource from showing up for racial justice: "white supremacy culture" https://www.showingupforracialjustice.org/white-supremacy-culture-characteristics.html
