2) Policing the way that a person talk's about their own health and trauma is a really crappy thing to do.

3) Don't even get me started on how problematic it is to suggest that a person is wrongfully occupying a hospital bed when said person is suffering from serious injuries, illness and lung damage.

If you say something hurtful, own up to your mistake(s), educate yourself, genuinely apologize and do better in the future. Also, understand that people have the right to be very upset with you and aren't under any obligation to accept your apology.
At the same time, there are certain behaviors (death threats, slurs, etc.) that are unacceptable. While the original comments were very upsetting, I'm asking that people please refrain from crossing the line between warranted harsh yet valid criticism and online harassment.
