i finally read the Big Writing Advice Book that everyone told me to read and i generally liked it!
one thing i wish these authors didn't (almost) always feature though is this implicit idea that you won't get published without 'connections' -- as they did

it always starts with 'i wrote my little heart out' but then 20 pages later you find
- 'my friend bill, who worked at doubleday'
- 'i gave the ms to my dad's literary agent'
- 'my MFA professor put me in touch with'
- 'my girlfriend, who had become an editor at'
- 'my friend bill, who worked at doubleday'
- 'i gave the ms to my dad's literary agent'
- 'my MFA professor put me in touch with'
- 'my girlfriend, who had become an editor at'
so i think if you read enough of these you start to associate 'success' with 'i had an in.'
i wish more of these books had the 'i didn't know a soul, no one vouched for me, i didn't skip any steps, i just did the work and went through the process, and now i am published' story

as people keep pointing out, stories have power
and if the 'writer advice book' story is 'you too can succeed if you have connected friends or got into prestigious degrees or workshops,' that has more weight than all the little regular everyday stories that don't get told :\\
