I was 27 years old when I realized how things actually worked on the court, so I'm in full agreement with Dray.

Incidentally, it's a similar vibe to the field of linguistics. https://twitter.com/anthonyVslater/status/1348041758928564227
Honestly - don't be offended to hear this put so bluntly, it's been repeated to me in many a conversation from many a player.

Not to 'name drop' - Vince Carter, in particular, would work with me to understand -why- I was asking certain questions.

It was a vital paradigm shift.
I want to put Greg's point in this thread. I grew up watching the game through the eyes of a certain "Peaches," and he DIDN'T KNOW JACK about basketball.

Couldn't identify a Flow set, couldn't call out a Fist, never -actually- broke down any plays. https://twitter.com/gwiss/status/1348055848963203072
I find that 'style' of PBP & commentary entirely detrimental to the growth and sustenance of the sport.

As Greg said, some former players are part of the problem.

Maybe they were never that clued in to the X's and O's, or maybe they don't see how the game has evolved.
Either way, the next generation is consuming the game through the eyes and language of these commentators.

This is where linguistic 'umwelt theory'- you know what, let me stay on topic 😂

'Bloggers' are hardly the problem. Internet consumption culture is a heavier issue.
In fact, you're much more likely to get accurate descriptions & breakdowns of what's happening from people like @TheSanjeshSingh and @o_a_khan than most broadcast teams, so I'm not here for anybody disparaging 'bloggers' as a result of what Dray said.

Bloggers saved the NBA. 😉
In my original tweet, I said:

"when I realized how things actually worked on the court"

That doesn't mean I can identify every set or every coverage, I'm personally bad at that.

It does help me understand how coverages are being manipulated and how player roles develop.
