Things are bad topside, so I'm going to start a thread of some of the wonderful underwater critters I've met over the past year or so in #Hawaii. #Scuba 1/x
I'm fortunate I was able to dive on #Kauai, #Maui & #Oahu in 2020. And I am so grateful I *can* dive despite lots of physical limitations. In fact, I can move more easily underwater than I can when upright on land. 2/x
First up: A peacock razorfish, a juvenile #wrasse species that is usually shy. This one put on a little dance for us. Check out the crest. #Kauai #Hawaii #Scuba 3/x
Next: Ambon puffer. I was so excited when I saw this fish...thought it was a juvenile blue triggerfish but @CoralReefFish set me straight. #Kauai #Hawaii #Scuba 4/x
My favorite eels: The dragon moray. There is one spot on #Kauai where several live. It happens to be an easy shore dive site. #Hawaii #Scuba 5/x
Bottom-dwelling scorpionfish. Some day they're ugly but really they're so ugly they're cute. #Hawaii #Scuba 6/x
White-tip reef shark at Mala Pier on #Maui, an old military pier that Hurricane Iniki knocked into the water in 1992. Great shallow dive site. #Hawaii #Scuba 7/x
(Bonus Homo sapiens & young honu - sea turtle - at the end of last tweet.) 8/x
Time for some more #Hawaii ocean critters from my dives over the past year or so. Here's a reticulated moray eel. 9/x
Here's a happy honu tucking his head into the reef to protect from sharks. Awww. Looks like a male based on the thick tail. 10/x
Here's a rockmover wrasse moving rocks & slurping up a brittle star for lunch. #Hawaii #Scuba 11/x
Spotted boxfish, one of the weirdest & brightest fish on the reef. Yes, they are built like a box. #Hawaii #Scuba 12/x
A pair of racoon butterfly fish and...wait for it...a spiny Hawaiian lobster. The first & only one I've seen out during the day. They are generally nocturnal & supposedly delicious. #Hawaii #Scuba 13/x
Porcupine pufferfish (unpuffed). #Hawaii #Scuba 14/x
A nest of juvenile white-tip reef sharks under Mala Pier on #Maui. #Hawaii #Scuba 15/x
Barry the barracuda, filmed last Wednesday. The local dive community named him/her. My first sighting of this behemoth and I kept a respectful distance from the stabby teeth. #Hawaii #Scuba 16/x
That's it for today. Will post more as I go through the 500gb of GoPro footage sitting on my drive. 17/x
Continuing my thread of #Hawaii reef creatures with another moray eel. Not sure of the species. Maybe @FunEelFacts knows. #scuba 18/x
Leaf scorpionfish. Fairly common but hard to spot as they look like...a leaf. #Hawaii #scuba 19/x
