Thread: Fall ArmyWorm (FAW). We are definitely having a good season rain wise no doubt. But a worrying sight of infestation of FAW in maize has been continuous, from emergence. Consequently, crop growth rates & yield potential are going to be significantly impacted.
FAW is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. In 2016 it was reported for the first time in Zimbabwe most likely from grain which came from Brazil. It is now causing significant damage to our maize crop and has great potential damage to yield & economically
FAW larvae have proved extremely difficult to control with insecticides. The frequency of egg lays, and the hidden feeding sites of larvae (in the whorl, under wrapper leaves, in leaf axils, in silks and cobs) makes chemical control only partially effective.
FAW has been observed feeding in other crops (sorghum, millet) but to a lesser extent

The effective management of FAW will rely on a combination of timely detection (scouting), suppression of populations by deployment of insecticides & other options to control larvae in the crop
From our experience at Izinkomo (Darwendale) use of chemical Uphold has been so beneficial as signs of mortality will be seen just under 6hrs
Other chemicals available include Spike Extra, Nemesis, Emanectin benzoate and many more from ZFC, Agricura, Farm and City, AgroVet.
Application must be made when
10% or less of the plants show shothole (Funnel) damage or as soon as shothole damage is observed.
Apply over the funnel of plants and ensure thorough coverage.
If re-infestation occurs a repeat application may be required within 10-14 days.
In summary, Scouting is very crucial in cropping. Early detection of pests and diseases can give you enough time to spray, treat or correct timely hence safeguarding your yield.

Contact your nearest AREX extension officers if you not sure.
