Trump/populism/alt-right (and left) mobs are a symptom of our sick culture. And censorship is a bandaid (non) solution. I see it as as akin to *some forms* of harm reduction in the treatment of addiction.
Ample evidence shows that harm reduction literally reduces harms and is compassionate. But some types (for some people all types) are considered 'enabling'; they don't address systemic problems. They are individualistic solutions. Censoring a sitting president is like this.
We need to address the factors that led us to become so polarized and so divided, rather than celebrate an attack on free speech. We need to have discussions about the role of big tech in the public square, and the power it wields, and if or how we can/should contain this power.
Censoring one person's incitement to violence (I say this knowing not everyone agrees this happened) is myopic. The weapon (censorship) could easily be turned on you etc. etc.
I guess the point I'm trying to arrive at is this: I don't care if you celebrate the Trump ban, but I do hope you consider that the action was a minor salve and has opened a pandora's box. Please don't forget this last bit. We need to start talking about the underlying issues.
Many of us have been talking about these issues, obviously, but, come on -- a sitting US president has effectively been banned from the internet, so it's high time for a deep dive into how we are going to live with big tech dominating our lives.
