every single time, for the past four years, there's been a high profile mass shooting with a sufficiently "political" character (read = falling with certain accepted frames of the political) people will pivot from, say, condemning the FBI to demanding they be given more "tools"
never mind that, days earlier, many of those same people will be, say condemning the FBI as "Trump's gestapo" or sharing stories (quite rightly terrifying) about the thorough infiltration of US security forces by white power and/or structural shared interests in white supremacy
the blunt fact is that US security forces ALREADY have an ENORMOUS arsenal of tools at their disposal, and the immense legal protections they enjoy in everything from surveillance to qualified immunity in the use of force have no real analogues in other nominal democracies
and it's also not just the case that they will inevitably use any additional tools to disproportionately and brutally target minority activities and dissent on "the left" - however you define that - but that such targeting and repression is *ongoing and relentless* even now
set aside we're about to have a new president who helped preside over years of GWoT repression, whose responses to uprisings vs police brutality have been woeful, and whose support for arming state security isn't just a matter of public record, but his PROMISE for the future
the simple fact is that this repression is guaranteed, whether or not anyone individually, whether in the heat of anger, fear of helpless, pain of trauma, etc, decides to publicly voice support for repression b/c it will (somehow!) be done right "this time" vs "the right people"
you don't need to do this, you just don't. they at once don't need you personally to cosign it, even as at the same time mobilizations behind repression add up and further legitimate it. it's an unforced, false necessity, and it goes nowhere good. please consider not doing this.
