Sometime early in 2020 a GOP strategist or someone in the WH realized their usual voter suppression tactics wouldn't work this time because of mail-in votes, which they knew from Trump's "pandemic hoax" rhetoric would be overwhelmingly Democratic.
Usually the purge voting rolls and close polling stations in largely black population centers. That's their base tactic, esp since they've gained control of a lot of state legislatures and have finished gerrymandering the hell out of all the red states.
But obviously that brutalist method of cheating/rigging wouldn't work and some clever boy in a suit realized this and informed his bosses, Mitch and Lindsey and whoever wrangles Donald J. Trump for them and the RNC.
So Trump started complaining about how mail-in and absentee ballots were subject to nothing but fraud even though we've used them for decades and history bears out these are perfectly reliable, safe methods of voting and always have been.
Then someone realized that was also going to suppress GOP voting this year to a certain extent. They got a bit worried. They got the PA GOP to enact a law where they wouldn't even start counting mail-in ballots until the polls closed. The PA GOP is way in/all in on the fix.
The Texas GOP also did the same thing here. This would set up a red mirage and give the more reliable GOP actors plausible deniability. But there's no controlling Donald J. Trump. Once he's in on a scheme he MUST blab about it.
He always has to share his secrets because he's so excited to be part of the secrets sharing club and he has this childish urge to be the "bad boy" in public, just like when he was a child and learned "shameful joy."
So they got a bit worried and knew they needed more help lest Donny give the game away. So they got him to appoint Louis DeJoy postmaster general with a mandate simply to FUCK THINGS UP.
Which DeJoy happily went about. Wow, did he ever fuck things up. Now the whole country's in an uproar in the lead in to the election. In which Biden/Harris soundly thumped Trump/Pence and it involved exactly the red mirage they'd hoped for.
But it wasn't even close. A smart cookie at this point would've cut his losses and conceded and planned a 2024 comeback, story of the century. But this is Donald J. Trump we're talking about.
His own worse enemy. No one fucks up like Trump. Six bankruptcies and a ruinous divorce. A one-man wrecking crew whose one legitimate success was getting elected President against one of the least popular over-qualified candidates ever.
And even then he lost the popular. He crowed about his brilliant EC-based strategy but that was purely on the GOP. Esp the PA GOP. Anyway he got his ass waxed on the first Tuesday in November 2020. Took all week and must've been painful but he got waxed.
So then he moved into Phase 2 of the scheme, the post-election election. Overturn. Overturn. He was hoping to do it in the courts but he fucked that up, Rudy fucked that up, all those weirdos and freako shady infomercial lawyers they used fucked that up.
Because all the REAL law firms they originally hired realized they were going to have to commit crimes. Lie under oath, fake evidence, intimidate witnesses all this kind of stuff that even should Trump win out they'd face real world consequences for in their professions.
OTHER lawyers would make it their life's mission to fuck them if it took 10000 years. But Rudy? What's Rudy got to lose? His rep's already shot because of the Hunter Biden laptop scam. Then Borat jumped him, too.
But there's something wrong with Rudy. He's not functioning very well these days. He's on the fritz. But he was eager to help because he has always publicly insisted he was going to be an American hero again when this was all over.
So for two months they flogged this pre-conceived lie, this scheme that had probably been carefully strategized by Mitch and his friends beforehand and then Trump got in on the act and turned it into a shit show. Like he does.
They also hadn't counted on RUN OFFS IN GEORGIA OF ALL PLACES. The pandemic helped screw them there, too. Unfortunately, Trump and the GOP backed a couple of criminal profiteers who were also incompetent campaigners.
Against two heavily backed Democrats and a determined grass roots get out the vote movement of which Stacey Abrams is the most public and celebrated of many dedicated organizers.
But it was too late. The Trump was already out of the bag and you had Rudy jetting all around the country spreading lies and COVID-19 in his wake and now instead of a GOP op it's purely Trump WH op and that means FUBAR. Always.
Ted Cruz and a few others tried to muscle in on the racket and bring it under control and make it look reasonable but there were too many creeps and weirdos involved. It turned into a Sedition Circus and the losses mounted in courts.
And holy shit-- even Trump-appointed judges and Justices refused to commit the expected crimes for Trump! He called them and called them and they wouldn't commit crimes for him! Unprecedented in his life of dealing with real estate agents and gossip columnists!
He couldn't do his fake tough guy mob boss role play with them. They would bend but not break. The media assured us each loss was the "final gasp of Trump's election challenge strategy" and we met milestone after milestone.
He got state GOP officials to come to the WH but he couldn't get them to sign on, or couldn't get enough of them to sign on. In GA the governor and secretary of state, staunch Trumpists, actually stood firm on election integrity. They could not lie about this.
If they did it would mean they actually presided over an illegal election and they were to blame for it and they'd bear all the consequences so they stuck to their guns and told the truth and Trump lost his shit.
People will lie for Trump but they want something out of it because their reps will never recover. Underneath all this was a growing rift in the GOP between Trump loyalists and GOP loyalists.
The difference is the Trumpers actively partook in the lies while the GOP loyalists remained publicly silent. They weren't going to lend material support to Trump's coup but they weren't going to lift a finger to stop him, either.
At least not until the state ECs certified the votes. And even then while they'd carry out their constitutional duties they still kinda hopes Trump would pull it off anyway. Or that he'd at least shut up and let them win the Senate in GA.
But as he wouldn't Mitch looked at the longterm for the party and saw there was none. Trump's base failed in November. Then they failed in GA in January. Mitch did his math and came up with an equation minus Trump.
And Mike Pence. He had his imaginary friend riding his back, too. It really came down to a stark decision. They all knew Trump and the election fraud story was a lie they'd all cooked up back in spring/summer 2020 during the initial pandemic stages.
They could overturn the election illegally and hope for the best or they could do what they were supposed to under the Constitution and just count the votes and accept them. But somehow it got turned into a big show by Trump and maybe Steve Bannon.
Someone put this idea in Trump's mind Pence could arbitrarily overturn the entire election on January 6th and award him the presidency again. Trump never would've come up with that on his own. He knows NOTHING of the process.
He didn't even know what an Electoral College was until November 2016 and he'd forgotten all the way until November 2020 when suddenly he got a reminder. But remember he was never an attentive student of ANYTHING.
And given his show biz proclivities and dalliance with the PBs and their ilk during all of this he heard about more protests and he decided it was time to take one last stand. He'd get that damned election or else!
Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley were well-aware of what they were inciting when they agreed to stand up that day. Remember a week before the only person really planning to was TOMMY TUBERVILLE!
The football coach from Alabama! Then Hawley and the always-scheming Cruz got in on it. It was going to be some show, Trump promised. The chans and parlers went bananas with the planning. Lots of metal pipes to buy. Lots of nylon handcuffs to buy.
T-shirts to print up. Rallying points to coordinate. Trump helped them out there when he couldn't stop himself from making a big speech. Where he finally told them to be strong for him and march for him. And oh boy did they ever march.
And here we are. Trump has immolated himself as we always knew he would. His GOP enablers and shameless creeps like Cruz won't ever own up to their role in the attempted coup. The GOP is split but not for long. The hydra always grows more heads.
The RNC is already making excuses for Trump and themselves. As expected. But all this is going down in history. We still don't know the full story. But there will be books galore. Hawley won't be their author, though.
Trump will be impeached again this week but it won't pass the Senate again. Biden and Harris will assume office with a narrow majority in the House and Senate and doom has been averted by inches.

FOOTNOTE: I left out the very important element of the story where Trump fired ALL the security experts and intelligence people who kept assuring everyone the election was one of the cleanest ever. Don't forget that. He fired all the people who told us he was lying!
