*BLOC TECHNIQUE THREAD*
1) Rally Point-
Demonstrations always have a set meet-up location, often at a park or local monument; where people assemble prior to a protest march mobilizing. The route may or may not be known in advance. This is the point of departure for the march.
1/?
‘Bloc Up’-
To dress ‘in bloc’ is often mistaken for wearing all black. Bloc is a method of anonymous protest that involves mask wearing and other coverings; including helmets/goggles. Members will often meet in the vicinity of the set meet-up to ‘bloc up’ before joining the crowd
March-
As the march begins, the bloc members will often carry a black flag to identify their location to other potential members looking to join them in a large crowd of people. At night, it is common for a flare to be ignited to provide their ‘comrades’ the bloc’s location.

3/?
Disperse & Destroy-
As the demonstration moves through a given area, it will pass ‘targets of opportunity’ for bloc members; such as Starbucks, banks, parked police vehicles, and other businesses. The members disassemble and begin destroying property and committing vandalism.
4/?
Regroup-
After property destruction has been sufficient for bloc members, they regroup within the heart of the peaceful crowd and remove their bloc attire - returning into civvies, so-to-speak. This makes them no longer identifiable to law enforcement as being the agitators.
5/?
Scatter-
As an unlawful assembly / illegal demonstration / riot is declared, bloc members will often flee the area to avoid arrest; others will stay to combat the responding police officers. Both are possible. This results in numerous innocent persons becoming riot police.

6/?
The goal of this is to get away with criminal acts, to turn a peaceful demonstration into a riot, to *incite* a riot, to have police pursue false arrests, and to 'strike at the heart of the system' in an anti-capitalist mentality.

This is all spoken from experience - not a book.
Any additional questions, please feel free to ask...!
Here’s me getting shot with a rubber bullet at point blank and being detained for taking photos in 2014 & 2015.

I have loads of riot experience from years ago ... with the scars to prove it 🤠
Going to pin this to my profile for a little while so that everybody gets to see it because I know I sort of hyped it up lol. Hopefully it is a decent explanation! I tried to make it understandable for pretty much anybody

If the watermark didn’t give it away, all photos used in the thread were taken by myself between 2012-15 in Montréal, QC, during my studies at McGill Uni.

I was the ‘unofficial-official protest photographer’ for the McGill Daily.
All captured with a Canon EOS 40D
