I also find it demoralizing that we’ve moved the needle this little in 70 years.
In some respects the fundamentals have now been hashed out...but the kraeplinian categories, already understood to be a dead end in 1950, persist and are even defended today.

Another consideration is whether there are things being discussed now that will follow this same trajectory...like is there an alternative description and methodology that in 70 years find its ascendence? If so, what is it? Interesting to think about.
It’s reading chapters like this that convince me I won’t leave a memorable mark on the field. So, better to focus on doing good solid work and being satisfied with it.
