If Democrats want real accountability, they should begin an investigation and hearings into the rise of fascism in the United States. Determine how it gained popular support, how the GOP allowed Trump to become their candidate and president, and how some Democrats enabled it.
. @AOC is right to call for "impeachment, removal, expulsion, and/or indictment of officials who aided, abetted, or incited the attack." But we can do more. We could hold an investigation into how fascism became a mainstream political ideology in the United States again.
Holding hearings on the rise and normalization of fascism in the United States would be a step toward accountability.

With control of the Executive and control of Congress, Democrats could ask hard questions of not just the GOP but of their own party.

Investigating the rise and normalization of fascism in the United States would mean not only holding politicians accountable who directly promoted it, but holding those accountable who allowed it to happen on their watch, when they were supposed to be the opposition.
If we hold public hearings and an investigation into the rise of fascism, we could show the American public how we got to the point where armed fascists with bombs invaded Congress and no one stopped them.
Only by understanding how we actually got here can we prevent it again.

There have been causes and conditions over many decades to normalize white supremacy and fascism in the US.
Call experts to testify. Explain how this happened. And then make legislation to address the deep structural issues that brought us to this moment.

As Democrats take control of Congress and the White House... Imagine how they could build a new era by starting with public hearings to investigate the rise of fascism along with passing New Deal style programs to ensure everyone has housing, food, water, education, healthcare.
If Democrats did hold hearings to investigate and understand the rise of fascism in the United States, and how we got to this point, it would also bring to light the contributing actions of Democratic presidents, Senators, and Congresspeople. This is why they will never do it.
Despite the fact that the establishment Democrats will never let it happen, I encourage @AOC, @IlhanMN, @CoriBush, @BernieSanders, and others to call for official public hearings to investigate the causes of the rise of fascism in our country, and the actions needed to stop it.
