Y'all. Neither Trump nor the internet "caused" this to happen. The seeds were there all along. Trump and the internet have watered them, tended them, enabled pollination, planted new fields.

There are many layers of accountability to navigate here. And if you peel them back, there's a reckoning required. I don't know what that looks like. I wish I did. I just hope we get there, that we don't give up while we work through the immediate layers.

Part of that reckoning means acknowledging that every major institution, from the government to law enforcement to the media to academia, minimized (or, worse, exacerbated) the suffering that right-wing actors have long caused, particularly among communities of color.
